Philosophy is a process of thinking critically that has been used by humans since before the Greeks used it to try to figure out how the world works and how best to live within it. It is the foundation of science, morality, and ethics and a means to satisfy our curiosity in a logical fashion. Recently a few well-known physicists have said that philosophy is unnecessary because now we have the means in our technological age to answer questions that metaphysicists attempted to resolve without fancy tools. Philosophy and science, however, are mutually dependent on each other.
Dan Fincke is a professor who has moved out of the university setting to teach philosophy online through Hangouts, making the vast field accessible to busy and curious and yearning people worldwide. He joins us to talk about all the whys and hows of his classes.

Dr. Melanie Elyse Brewster is a professor in counseling psychology who studies the mental health effects of marginalization, including marginalizatoin of atheists. In her new book, Atheists in America, Dr. Brewster collects more than two dozen stories from atheists across the country, illuminating both what atheists have in common and how atheism interacts with other aspects of our identities.
From the publisher's description:
These narratives illuminate the complexities and consequences for nonbelievers in the United States. Stepping away from religious belief can have serious social and existential ramifications, forcing atheists to discover new ways to live meaningfully without a religious community. Yet shedding the constraints of a formal belief system can also be a freeing experience. Ultimately, this volume shows that claiming an atheist identity is anything but an act isolated from the other dimensions of the self. Upending common social, political, and psychological assumptions about atheists, this collection helps carve out a more accepted space for this minority within American society.

What's it like to be a humanist, an atheist, a freethinker in outstate Minnesota? How do atheists find each other in a small town, where they risk exposure leading to the loss of friendships or even business if word gets out that they aren't religious? On Sunday, July 27, Atheists Talk has invited Amy LaValle Hansmann from Brainerd and Ken Kressin from Cannon Falls. These two have taken the initiative to form groups for atheists to gather, to talk, to have fun and to provide mutual support in areas that can be less than supportive. We will talk about their struggles, their successes and a bit about what sorts of activities they have engaged in.

We'd originally scheduled this show for July 6. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we weren't able to do the show that morning. We've rescheduled Dr. Rubidium for this Sunday, July 20.
Dr. Raychelle Burks is better known as Dr. Rubidium, forensic chemist and smart alec extraordinaire and the developer of the recent (entirely hypothetical) zombie-repelling perfume. She is in the Twin Cities this weekend to participate in SkepchickCon, the science and skepticism track at science fiction and fantasy convention CONvergence. At the conference, she’ll be talking about the science of zombies, Breaking Bad, and Song of Ice and Fire.
She’s kindly agreed to get up early this Sunday and join us in the studio to talk about using fantasy and snark to hook people on the fun of science and about her crusade against chemophobia.
