Religion, in addition to lending credence to authoritarianism and social control, trades in ideas. There have been some good ideas to come from religion but then, in fairness, we really need to talk about the bad ideas. And religion has generated some very bad ideas. Valerie Tarico, PhD. is a pyschologist and she was at one time an evangelical Christian. She has examined twelve of the ideas that originated in religion that have created mayhem, death and destruction as well as unnecessary emotional pain. Mike Haubrich will be hosting as well as interviewing Dr. Tarico on today's show.

Minnesota Atheists is doing something different with our summer conference this year. We've teamed up with Campus Atheists, Skeptics, and Humanists and Secular Woman to bring you a conference by activists and for activists, the Secular Women Work Conference. Featuring Lauren Lane, Mandisa Thomas, and Desiree Schell (for a start), this conference will polish up and build your activist skills as well as inspiring you to try more.
Stephanie Zvan will be joined this Sunday by her co-organizers Cheslea Du Fresne and Monette Richards to tell you about the conference, why it's needed, and why you want to attend.

This Sunday is a special day for Atheists Talk Radio - it's our 300th episode! To celebrate we're going to jam the AM950 KTNF studio with hosts and interviewers to chat about our history, our favorite shows and stories, and who we'd love to speak with in 2015. Rumor has it that we might even introduce a couple of new interviewers!
We hope you'll join us and help us celebrate 300 shows!

Genetic Modification is a technology that frightens a great many people because it is tampering with the DNA of our foods. While the process and technology of GMO is relatively new to human engineering, we have been modifying our foods through the process of crossbreeding for millenia to make it tastier and more nutritious and to improve its resistance to disease and drought. Genetic engineering holds the promise to speed up the process of engineering food for the results we desire because technology is able to more accurately target the desired genes.
There is a tendency, however, to associate the process and research with Big Food and specifically unpopular agricultural corporations such as Monsanto. In the world of social media, discussion of the topic is often very heated, perhaps as much as the topics of creationism, global climate change denialism or even misogyny and race. Anastasia Bodnar, PhD, is a genetic scientist who has studied the issue of genetic engineering and has been very active in promoting education through the internet regarding the topic. She has encountered the rancorous discussion on many occasions and will be our guest to talk with Mike Haubrich about the science as well as the social aspects.
