"Sins of Our Fathers", Shawn Lawrence Otto on Atheists Talk #290, November 23, 2014

Shawn Lawrence Otto is a local writer who adapted the screenplay for the Oscar-nominated movie The House of Sand and Fog. Otto is also a co-founder of "ScienceDebate," the effort to include science in the debates and discussions of pre-election politics, and has written a non-fiction book on the topic of using science to drive public policy, Fool Me Twice. Otto recently published a novel on the subject of relationships between the Native American and white cultures in Minnesota. He will be in our studios to talk about this new book, Sins of Our Fathers, a tale of race, money and the American Dream.

While this is not an atheist novel, atheists may relate to the themes of alienation and exclusion from public life. Greg Laden and Mike Haubrich will be in the studio with Shawn.

"#AtheistVoter", Nick Fish on Atheists Talk #289, November 16, 2014

Voting matters. Voting as an atheist or nonbeliever matters, even when all the candidates are religious. Yet Millennials, the generation known for being far less religious than prior generations, had incredibly low turnout this election. The impact of that was felt when votes were tallied.

This Sunday, we'll talk to American Atheists Development Director Nick Fish about the election results, what those results mean for the causes usually championed by atheists, why we need to pay more attention to state races, and about the future of American Atheists' #AtheistVoter campaign. Fish feels so strongly about the importance of voting that he helped to register 5,000 voters for the 2008 election. Join us this weekend as we talk about why.

"Roll to Disbelieve", Cassidy McGillicuddy on Atheists Talk #288, November 2, 2014

In her twenties, Cassidy McGillicuddy was a fundamentalist married to a preacher when she experienced what the avid gamer calls her "saving throw against illusion". At the same time she realized she could no longer believe, she realized that no one else could make her pretend to believe, not even her preacher husband. The marriage didn't survive, but Hawkwood thrived. These days, she writes about Christian apologetics and bad behavior at Roll to Disbelieve, helping others to lower their own saving throws.

This Sunday, Captain Cassidy, as she's known online, will talk to Scott Lohman about her journey and her writing.

"Animal Liberation and Atheism" Kim Socha on Atheists Talk #287, October 26, 2014

Tomorrow on Atheists Talk we have Kim Socha joining us to discussion the intersection of animal liberation and atheism. From the Amazon site for Kim's new book, Animal Liberation and Atheism: Dismantling the Procrustean Bed:

Religious arguments for animal rights and liberation are fairly common in the literature on the animal question and the animal condition. Meanwhile, arguments considering animal liberation from a deliberately secular perspective are virtually nonexistent. In Animal Liberation and Atheism: Dismantling the Procrustean Bed, Kim Socha initiates the conversation by exploring how the concept of religion is inherently antithetical to animal liberation. She also challenges secularists to view the world differently, free from religion's cultural baggage. Finally, Animal Liberation and Atheism is a call for everyone to consider developing a system of ethics disengaged from anthropocentric and speciesist mythologies so that needless violence against all beings and the environment may diminish.
